Shaggy carpets have been around for decades — and yet they remain one of the most consistently imported area rug categories from China. Why? Because the combination of softness, visual warmth, and affordability is hard to replicate with other floor covering options.
Our Tianjin Wuqing factory has been producing shaggy carpets since the early 2000s. Here's what factories actually charge in 2026, and which pile heights are driving the most orders.
Despite the rise of flat-weave rugs, jute, and minimal carpet trends, shaggy carpets hold a specific place in the market that other categories cannot fill:
The most practical option. Still has the shaggy appearance and soft feel, but easier to vacuum and maintain. Best for: family rooms, children's bedrooms, high-traffic living areas, and pet-friendly homes. This is the most popular pile height for Amazon FBA sellers because it's easy to ship and manage.
The sweet spot for most retail applications. The pile is long enough to feel luxurious but short enough to maintain reasonably well. Best for: main living rooms, master bedrooms, and dining areas. This is what most buyers mean when they say "shaggy carpet."
The traditional shag carpet experience. The long pile creates a dramatic, luxurious look and an exceptionally soft feel. Best for: low-traffic bedrooms, reading corners, nurseries, and decorative living room accents. Requires more maintenance than shorter piles.
The premium segment. These approach the visual effect of real animal fur and create a striking visual statement. Best for: luxury retail positioning, boutique hotels, and design-forward residential projects. Price premium of $2.00-4.00/pc over medium pile equivalents.
Long pile carpets with printed designs — geometric patterns, abstract art, floral prints — combining the softness of shag with the visual interest of printed carpets. Our printed carpet article covers these in more detail.
Prices in USD per piece, FOB Tianjin port. For standard polyester/acrylic pile. OEM custom logo adds $0.20-0.50/pc.

| Medium Pile (15-25mm) | $3.50–$5.50 | $5.00–$7.50 | $5.50–$8.00 | 50 pcs |
| Long Pile / Shag (25-40mm) | $4.50–$7.00 | $6.50–$10.00 | $7.00–$10.50 | 50 pcs |

Landed cost example (Vancouver): A medium pile shaggy carpet at $4.50/pc FOB in 80×150cm costs approximately $5.90-6.60/pc landed in Vancouver (FOB + freight + duty + GST). At $100-160 retail, that's a 75-85% gross margin.
Shaggy carpets have a specific logistics challenge: they cannot be vacuum-compressed like flat-woven rugs. They must be rolled, which means more volume per piece.
Cost-saving tip: Mix pile heights in the same container. Short pile pieces pack more tightly, offsetting the volume of long pile pieces. A mixed container of 300 short pile + 200 medium pile pieces often fits better than 500 all-medium.
Amazon FBA sellers: Short pile shaggy carpets (8-15mm) are the most popular for FBA because they are easier to vacuum, ship more efficiently, and have fewer returns related to cleaning difficulty. Medium pile (15-25mm) commands higher retail prices and has better perceived value — but generates slightly more returns. Choose based on your return tolerance vs. margin targets.
Most shaggy carpets from China are made from polyester (PET) or acrylic fiber. Polyester is more common for budget-to-midrange products — it's soft, stain-resistant, and colorfast. Acrylic is used for premium products — it has a wool-like feel and better resilience. Both can be OEKO-TEX certified. polypropylene is used for outdoor shaggy rugs.
All shaggy carpets shed to some degree, especially in the first few months. This is loose fibers from the cut pile and is normal. Regular vacuuming reduces shedding over time. Higher quality carpets with tighter pile construction shed less. If shedding persists beyond 3 months, it may indicate a lower quality product.
Short pile shaggy carpets (8-15mm) are more practical for homes with pets — they are easier to vacuum and less likely to trap pet hair. Long pile shaggy carpets can be difficult to clean if pets have accidents. Consider a short pile option if you have pets, or our printed low-pile alternatives.
Standard backing is cotton canvas with latex coating for anti-slip performance. This is standard for residential use. Some factories offer felt backing as an upgrade for better grip on hardwood floors. Custom backing specifications are available for OEM orders.
Yes. Our factory can produce custom pile heights in 5mm increments from 8mm to 50mm+. Custom pile heights typically require 100-200 piece MOQ and add 10-20% to the base price. Custom pile heights are popular for premium retail positioning and boutique hotel projects.
